Maintaining your Heat Pump System in Cold Weather

You will notice that ice is building up on the outdoor unit.  That is part of normal operation during the defrost cycle.

You might notice that emergency heat mode will kick on.  This is normal as the heat pump may not be able to keep up in the extreme cold temperatures.

Most heat pump systems will operate as normal in temps down to -22 degrees!

If you do notice that your heat pump is struggling to keep up in the colder weather, or if you notice it has issues with defrosting properly, you may want to consider replacement opportunities.
